Hyllieravinen - A New Nature for Hyllie

Project Type

Individual assignment, course: "Dynamic Vegetation Design", SLU Alnarp

Date

Spring 2023

DESIGN OBJECTIVES
- Allowing natural flow of water and variations in water levels
- Emphasis on native and edible vegetation as a strategy to support cultural exchange as well as biodiversity
- Unique “nature for Hyllie” based on regional landscape types
- A valley that provides an authentic nature experience
- Provide strategies for dynamic vegetation development over time

Hyllieravinen is based on natural vegetation systems and a topography that generates micro climates and a larger park area. An immersive nature.
A familiar type of Scanian landscape, yet contrasting the new urban development of Hyllie.

EROSION
The south facing steep slope catches the sun and the north facing slope is more flat to minmize the cold. Erosion is central to the expression of the ravine and mainly concentrated to land rather than areas with water. The eroding slopes provide important habitats and make the landscape less accessible for humans in some parts, which benefits wildlife.

WATER FINDING ITS WAY
The natural movements of water are utilized to establish natural form, achieved through a wide floodplane. Hyllieravinen is making the most of its water resources to enhance experience and biodiversity values. A wide bottom plane with long slopes allowes the water to move freely with varying speeds through the area. Slower in the wetland/pond area and faster in the more narrow passages.

A SOCIAL NATURE
Hyllieravinen present many opportunities to interact with the new urban nature, both up close and enjoying views from a distance. Hyllie is, as Malmö, rich in cultural diversity and its inhabitants holds knowledge of nature from all over the world. In Hyllieravinen, the residents will be able to forage edible plants all year around. The vegetation is mainly native but with exotic features such as Quince and Walnut trees. To harvest, cook and eat foods from your own neighbourhood is an important part of every day life in Hyllie.
